Old Bridge House

Old Bridge House

Greeted by these lovely flowers and super cute door stopper as we got in OBH

Just this past weekend, myself and my family drove down to the south of England to Looe, Cornwall where we stayed for 2 nights. We stayed at the Old Bridge House Bed and Breakfast and it was just an exceptional  place and time spent and here's why:

First of all, we were greeted in the reception with the lovely homely atmosphere that one would normally get as a house guest and were greeted by one of the lovely elderly couple who owns the place.
He showed us quickly around the dining and guest areas where he said the open bar in the guest area is open for everyone of legal age to just take their alcohol of choice and write down the quantity and name of the drink on their 'honesty book' and it will then be charged to the room at the end of the stay; which my parents thought the book's title couldn't be more accurate since you have to be honest indeed.

We were then showed to our room which was nice and cosy with everything required available to us in the confines of the 4 corners of that space. There was a kettle, cups and tea/coffee/hot chocolate and even Horlicks and biscuits for the guest to help themselves with. There's  TV for entertainment with a range of free view channels, a nice and clean toilet and shower with tiny bottles of toiletries provided and even a hair dryer  in one of the drawers in the room.

Then of course, there's the comfy bed and delicious food. The breakfast choices ranging from 3 different choices of: Cornish breakfast (similar to English with the exception of black pudding and instead replaced with home-made sausage), Fish (haddock) or croissant; although I'm sure the fish and croissant is more than just that I just can't remember what they came with.

In the dining area, there is a variety of cereals to choose from for breakfast as well to start with before the main breakfast and also some fresh fruit, some fresh orange juice or other flavoured bottled juice, tea and coffee.

In our 2 days of stay, we had the Cornish breakfast and I must say that it was definitely good and the home-made sausage is definitely a winner in that breakfast. The breakfast set had a large thick bacon, almost like a gammon, a nice big and fat sausage, baked beans, egg, grilled tomato, mushrooms and toast; although the accommodation also lets you choose whether you want certain pieces in the breakfast or not and whether you prefer fried, poached or scrambled egg (this sheet is available in the room and just needs to be handed in to the reception before tomorrow's breakfast.)

The Old Bridge House is located right in front of the River Nith, which meets the sea further down South of Cornwall. The view, as my sister said is just like Venice (as she's been before) without the sun, with the boats, sea gulls and the water and the bridge and the house on the hills; they all just form a magnificent, picturesque scenery, which is the view from ODH.

There are also shops across the road such as boots and many more like clothes shop, food shop, take aways and even restaurant such as the Rivercroft, which we dined in the first night, all across the bridge from the B&B and all accessible by walking.

The Old Bridge House is a really comfy and homely place with the highest hospitality from Colin and Liz who both run the place. From the amazing location to the amazing food to the amazing welcome and farewell; the Old Bridge House is definitely a recommended place to stay at when down in Cornwall or even when just in England.  Visit Cornwall and stay here since there's a range of things to do, there's a zoo, amusement park, waterparks and many more.

The Irish Pub

The Irish Pub

Second Day in Paris for our short holiday and we dined in a restaurant called 'The Irish Pub' near our hotel by the marina. The funny thing is the restaurant has an English (well Irish) name but the menu and the waiters cannot speak any english at all.

But aside from that, the food was great and so is the service despite the language barrier. The menu mostly consisted of filling food like burgers, steaks, sandwiches, etc.

We ordered burger, sandwich and my dad ordered a crepe meal which had salad and all sorts of accompaniments with it. The food was really filling but we didn't stop there, we shared desserts of ice cream with cream and chocolate sauce and banana split.

From having the banana split, it made me want to create my own back here at home and I shall do it soon when I can.

More food updates later :)

La Cour De La Huchette

La Cour De La Huchette

This week, me and my family went to Paris for a short holiday for the 3rd time and along great company and great city comes great food.

We dined at nice restaurants and had amazing food that certainly fuelled us up ready for the excursions of the day.

Here is the first of the restaurants which is called 'La Cour de la Huchette' in English 'The Court of Huchette' and 'Huchette' being one of the oldest streets of Paris.

The restaurant was really nice and had a really nice atmosphere where there is an outdoor restaurant which is like a greenhouse because of the roofing being clear and there were plants running along the walls and stone walls. The tables also had flower setting in the centre and the room was just so bright and vibrant.

On to the menu, the menu was really varied, there was pizza, pasta, meat, fish, frog legs and even snail dishes. My sister and her boyfriend shared a pizza dish which had ham, olives and mushrooms as toppings (very Italian-like). They also had snails or 'escargos' as the French say it as starters. I'm not really a big fan on snails as they are or as food, I just think they are slimy but I must say from what my sister and her boyfriend have said about the snails, it must be really good. They were served with garlic butter sauce which gave them their flavour and also served in their shells for presentation.

For my starter, I had ham platter with salad and gherkins. There were two types of ham on the platter one is cured and one is regular ham. I'm also not a big fan of gherkins so I left that but out.
The main, on the other hand, was not only appetising but also very delicious. It was beef cooked in red wine served with potato layer bake, braised rice with tomato sauce and salad.
It was a really good balance with the texture and taste. From the softness of the potatoes and rice to the tender beef and crunchy salad.

This restaurant and it's food were really satisfactory and in my opinion really worth the cost. I really recommend it if even you visit the city of Paris.

More travel food from this holiday and this majestic city in later posts.

American Garni, Raw Beef, Lasagne and Chicken

Hello there folks, here's the next lot of the food we had on our 2nd day or should I say 1st day because we arrived during night time in Belgium.

Anyway during our 2nd day we just pretty much wandered around Brussels like what tourists do. We stopped at a restaurant just where the Grand Place was and there were actually quite a few rows of restaurants next to each other although they were all pretty packed. We were actually quite lucky we found this restaurant that had sits available since it was also lunch hour so it was extra busy.

So for the food, my sister ordered lasagne which basically is what she orders all the time or if not that then any other pasta option (you know you do sis :D). I ordered something called American Garni and I didn't have a clue what it was but I was just expanding my food comfort zone so I just ordered anything that sounded appetising and I thought this would've been something like chicken wings or a burger 'cause I think those foods are quite American but nope. What I got was potato salad with rocket leaves, carrot and lettuce salad and corn-beef-looking food mash.

The overall taste of what I ordered wasn't bad, the potato salad was really good especially for someone like me who doesn't really like potato salad in general. Surprisingly I liked this one. However, I didn't know what the mash was called and what's even in it but it was alright anyway although I got bored of the taste afterwards and just left it.

My mother ordered beef but she didn't know that she was ordering raw beef and was quite shocked when she got it. But it surprisedher because she liked it but she said she wouldn't order it again if given the choice. My sister liked it as well but I didn't because of the olives. The beef didn't taste raw on the other hand which is surprising.

Finally my dad had chicken in some sort of cheese sauce that looked like mild curry looking to me but it was good as I had a taste.

That's it for that food batch. Stay tuned for the next food post.
